How to Declutter Your Kent Home Before a Move in 2021
To save time and stress, it’s the perfect opportunity to declutter your Kent home before a move. As fun and exciting as moving homes can be, moves are also challenging and a little overwhelming, it’s the third most stressful life event. A big reason for this comes down to clutter. Trying to pack up your entire home at the last minute often means taking everything with you... including things that you may not need or want anymore. It also means having to deal with way more stuff. And, as anyone who's gone through a move knows, the last thing you want is to spend forever unpacking boxes and boxes of stuff you won't need.
The simplest way to avoid all of these headaches is to start getting things organised in advance. And I have first-hand experience in this since moving to a different continent. Keep reading to get my advice on how to declutter your Kent home before a move.
Declutter Your Kent Home Before a Move
Booking movers, making endless lists, throwing things into boxes as moving day looms – none of these things helps to make moves less stressful. Although moving in itself is never going to be without its share of stresses, there are some things you can do to take away a good chunk of the hassle.
Start planning early.
The first step in decluttering your home before a move is to start planning as early as possible. Give yourself enough time to go through all of your things in every single room. Depending on the size of your home, this could be a month or even longer. It's never too early to get a plan underway, however. Even if you don't bring out the boxes until you're ready, having lists in place will take off a lot of pressure when the time comes to start packing. Make a spreadsheet, download a moving checklist, create a planner in your journal... however you prefer to plan, now is the time to get going.
Have a packing strategy.
When putting that plan together, it helps to have a packing strategy in place. How will you start packing? Will you go from room to room? Will you organise your boxes by category instead? How much space will you have in the moving truck? Even simple things like including a box or two of day-to-day goods that you will need right away can make a huge difference. This box could include basics such as toiletries, clothing, tea, coffee and sugar, mugs, kettle, and anything else you will want once you arrive at your new home.
Keep, sell, donate or toss.
This is no time to hang on to things you don't use. A move to a new home is a great opportunity to rid yourself of unwanted things. Be brutal. As a general rule of thumb, if you haven't used an item for the last year, you are not likely to use it any time in the future. Set aside boxes for things you want to sell, donate or throw away. Go through your home and remove items you don't plan to keep before packing. This will free up a lot of space and make sure that you leave your old house only with the important stuff rather than the clutter.
